Dear Parents:
We are so excited to be teaching Art to the students at Cathedral. There are three of us volunteering this year and while we each teach separate classes; we share a room and supplies. We are already off to a great start, with Art lining the halls and a classroom of our own.
We wanted to let you know that we are planning an Art show in the spring. We don’t know any of the details about this yet. However, we do know we want to keep tabs on the artwork so that it doesn’t mysteriously disappear, never to return. So, artwork will not be sent home regularly. Each quarter, we will review and keep some work from every student for the art show and send the rest home. Until then, if you want to see your child’s artwork, please come on up to school and take a look around. It is hanging everywhere.
While we have been generously given a budget for supplies, many items we could use are actually easier to collect from homes than to buy in stores. Instead of adding to the landfill you can bring the following items in to school and we will make Art from them! We will have a box in the Art room for these items:
-
Sculpture items:
-
Cardboard wrapping paper rolls, paper towel and toilet paper rolls, or other cardboard forms from packaging (for sculpture assembly)
-
Small boxes (jewelry, mini cereal boxes, etc.)
-
Shoe boxes
-
Small knick-knacks (game pieces, dice, puzzle pieces, army men, tiny animals, keys, etc.)
-
Clean plastic containers: empty floss cases, film canisters, disc cases, etc.
-
Old CDs or DVDs
-
Foil
-
Magazines
-
Old picture frames WITH OR WITHOUT GLASS to paint and frame artwork.
-
Craft items (pipe cleaners, buttons, metallic paper or similar items for collages)
Other than this, we do have a Wish List for the Art room, which our budget just couldn’t accommodate. If you would like to donate any items to the classroom or your child’s class, these are some things we could use: Poster board, Scotch Tape, Duct Tape, and Gift Cards to Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby or Michaels (stores for canvases, Air drying clay, and other Art tools/supplies). We are also in dire need of a drying rack to create space for artwork to set or dry.
If you have any connections or resources for a quantity of items (remember we can use almost anything to make art) or scraps from lumber, metal, or plastic sources, or if you have any questions about anything you think we could use, please let us know.
Our goals are to teach the children to appreciate art of the past and present, open minds to see the art all around us, introduce a variety of art media and methods, and use our imaginations and talents to create beautiful masterpieces.
